 What's New for the 2022 Toyota 4Runner?

If you are in the market for a bold, capable SUV with truck-based capabilities and a slew of modern features, it may be challenging to overlook the Toyota 4Runner. The 2022 4Runner is the fifth generation, bringing one major update to the table this year. The TRD Sport trim level is offered for the first time. It is one of eight trim levels available, and it sits between the 4Runner Trail Special Edition and the SR5 Premium trim levels. The new option has the same powertrain that all of the other current 4Runner trim levels have. This is a V6, 4.0-liter engine that produces 270 horsepower. The engine is paired with a five-speed auto transmission across the board. The TRD Sport has a rear-wheel drive drivetrain with an optional four-wheel drive.

Additional features unique to the TRD Sport are:

  • A firmer suspension system
  • A hood scoop
  • Heated front seats
  • SofTex®-trimmed seats
  • TRD Sport badge on C-pillars
  • TRD Sport carpet floor mats

If you opt for the base-level 4Runner, your SUV will have an 8-inch touch display screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also will have a split-folding second-row with an available third row, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, skid plates, roof rails, 17-inch wheels, LED lights, a powered rear window, and a 120-volt power outlet in the cargo space. All 4Runner SUVs for 2022 also have forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning.

As you progress up the trim lineup, the 2022 4Runner may add equipment like a portable beverage cooler, a rear cargo deck, a roof rack, an auto-dimming rear mirror, a sunroof, keyless entry, a keyless ignition, 20-inch wheels, a navigation system, a JBL sound system, ventilated leather seats and more. Select trims also have an off-road suspension system, all-terrain tires, upgraded skid plates, Fox dampers, a locking rear differential, additional driving modes, and more.

** EPA-estimated 16 city/19 hwy/17 combined mpg for 2021 4Runner. Use for comparison purposes only. Your mileage will vary for many reasons, including your vehicle's condition and how/where you drive. See www.fueleconomy.gov.
1. Cargo and load capacity limited by weight and distribution. Always properly secure cargo and cargo area.
2. Before towing, confirm your vehicle and trailer are compatible, hooked up and loaded properly and that you have any necessary additional equipment. Do not exceed any Weight Ratings and follow all instructions in your Owner's Manual. The maximum you can tow depends on base curb weight plus the total weight of any cargo, occupants, and added vehicle equipment. “Added vehicle equipment” includes additional standard/optional equipment and accessories added by the manufacturer, dealers, and/or vehicle owners. The only way to be certain of your vehicle’s exact curb weight is to weigh your vehicle without passengers or cargo. [Calculated with the new SAE J2807 method.] Installation of a tow hitch receiver or other accessories located near the rear bumper or side-door kick sensors may require disabling or removing the kick sensor, and the sensor operation setting in your vehicle should be turned off. See Owner's Manual for limitations.
