Many have tried to surpass the 2016 Toyota Camry, but they are always met with staunch opposition from Toyotaís best-seller. Here, we will look at the Ford Fusion vs the Camry.
Whether you drive a black Camry, silver Camry, or a red Camry, you will always get the same reliable, capable engine under the hood. The 2016 Toyota Camry offers two gasoline powertrains; a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 178 horsepower, and a 3.5-liter V6 with 268 horsepower. There is also a Camry Hybrid which features the 2.5-liter I4 combined with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. The Toyota Camry Hybrid net horsepower is 200, or 149 kW. Both gasoline engines are married to a six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift mode and paddle shifters (on the SE and above) and the Camry Hybridís powertrain is mated to a CVT gearbox. The Ford Fusion offers three standard gasoline engines; a 2.5-liter I4 with 175 horsepower, a 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder with 181 horsepower, and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost I4 with 240 horsepower. There is also a Ford Fusion Hybrid available, which features the 2.0-liter engine paired with a battery pack and electric motor for a 141 net hybrid horsepower. All gasoline engines for the Fusion are also coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifter available on some models and the Fusion Hybrid gets a CVT like the Camry does. But, even though the Fusion offers one more engine, it still lags behind in power with no V6 available. Plus, apples to apples, the 178 horsepower on the Camry 2.5-liter I4 trumps the 175 horsepower on the standard Fusion 2.5-liter engine, and the Fusion's maximum 240 horsepower is still almost 30 horsepower fewer than the Camry's 268 horsepower V6. So if it's power you want, it's the 2016 Camry all the way.
You might thing a more powerful engine takes away from fuel efficiency, but not in the 2016 Camry. Taking into consideration the equal 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines on both cars, the potent Camry manages an impressive EPA-estimated 25 city and 35 highway mpg while the Fusion only musters up 22 city and 34 highway mpg. The fact that the standard Camry engine has more horsepower and still manages better fuel economy than the Fusion is a real credit to Toyota's engineering team. The Toyota Camry Hybrid 2016 MPG rating has been estimated at 40 city and 38 highway miles per gallon; which is slightly better than the Ford Fusion Energi which is estimated at 40 city and 37 highway miles per gallon by the EPA.
Another area where Toyota always manages to beat its competitors is with rear passenger room, and the 2016 Camry continues that tradition over the Ford Fusion. Back-seat passengers will enjoy 38.1 inches of headroom and 38.9 inches of legroom while the Fusion is more cramped in the back with only 37.8 inches of headroom and 38.3 inches of legroom. And for taller passengers, a couple of inches makes a huge difference in comfort.
